Uncovering the layers on our Renovation project

Until today we were having a quiet time on our design build and renovation project. One of our builders moved house last week so they took the opportunity to leave site and get some other jobs done. Befpre they left last week they did complete the underpinning of the garage which is now all sorted. They are back today, with drill in hand, and have been knocking holes through to our bedroom – oh the dust!

We took the opportunity to do our own bit of renovating.  I have just completed the sketch plans for our daughter’s bedroom wardrobes and they are being build next week so removing the cupboard on the landing was part of the plan for her room. We uncovered this most amazing wall paper in the back of the cupboard!

If you have a building project, interior or garden and landscaping project which you need help with or ideas for then please give me a ring: Alison 01572 747318 or 07973843020.

I work on interior design and garden design projects in Stamford, Lincolnshire, Oakham, Uppingham and Rutland as well as further afield. I will design a garden to complement the architecture of your home and choose the right landscaping materials to complement it. If you are frustrated with endless searching for the right fabric or wallpaper and paint colours and overwhelmed with the enormous choice, then allow me to make a handpicked selection for you. I will complement the style of your existing rooms and provide a few choice pieces which will bring the whole look together.

The structure on our new build goes up

Every day we can see new progress being made and the walls of our new build are going up fast. The block work is now up above window height and the scaffolding arrived at the end of last week. This is now all loaded with blocks and stone so that progress can quickly be made once the steel supporting beams are in.

I took my husband Peter to see the manufacturer of some solid wood windows which I really wanted to include in the build. As we stepped out of the car the smell of fresh red cedar engulfed us. As we were assailed by this wonderful smell I knew that convincing Peter to the merits of the windows was going to be an easy sell – Just don’t tell him! I wasn’t to know that the timber company would be sawing red cedar when we arrived, but I couldn’t have planned it better.

Walk on the wild side

Autumn is one of my favourite times of year. When ever I’m designing a garden for a client I love to add some seasonal interest for autumn and winter. If I can’t make a garden look good in the summer I wouldn’t be doing my job, but giving a client interest in the Autumn, especially in a small garden can be quite a challenge. For me it’s all about form, texture and colour.  Leaves can be beautiful and a vase filled with foliage from the garden can create an amazing centre piece even without the flowers.

Enjoy my walk on the wild side of gardening

Autumn colours

And textures

Add interest to a garden

Add some fairy magic

and a sprinkling of fairy dust

And who could resist

Walk this way

Designing and building our stone walls

We’re making steady progress on our design, build and renovation project. The block work is now above window height and the stone is going up quite quickly now that the builders have got into a rhythm. More exciting is the fact that we have resolved the issue of underpinning the garage and the steel U beams  have all been ordered along with the steels for the new extension. They should be with us early next week. The scaffolding to get us above first floor level is arriving on Friday and then they promise we’ll make steady progress until we reach roof level.

The walls go up

Work has been quite slow this week – I don’t think the weather helps it has been such dank, dark days of late. Where did that lovely weather from last week go? I’ve resorted to making our builder Lee, who has been on site on his own this week , real coffee just to keep him going!

Still we now have a fair amount of stone wall up and it’s looking beautiful. It starts out a bit scraggy (technical term I’m sure) when the joints are not smooth and the mortar is spread through each course but once it is raked back it looks beautiful.

Stone works goes up

On Tuesday I resolved the issue of the underpinning of the garage with both the structural engineer and the building control officer in agreement about the use of a U beam. Some number crunching by the structural engineer later and we have a solution which will be manageable and therefore slot into the gap we have easily, will support the extra weight and hopefully won’t cost the earth. We still have to cost the final piece of this jigsaw but I feel we have made good progress and it does prove that 3 heads are better than one!

On with more stonework tomorrow I hope.

What jobs should I do in the garden: November

T’is the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but what is there for gardeners to do this month? Here’s my latest update on what you should be getting up to in the garden in November.

This is my favourite time of year. I know I should love summer with its heady mix of annuals and perennials making borders look like a Monet painting but for me, spring and autumn are my favorite times of the year.

I love the moment the soil awakens in Spring and up pop all my autumn planted bulbs. I love the way new seeds uncoil from the ground pushing clods of earth aside. In autumn I love the mists, the glistening cobwebs, watching spiders spin their way from plant to plant and birds stealing the last seeds from spent seed heads.

General tidy up

While the soil is still warm and damp, move and plant shrubs and herbaceous plants

Pull out sweet peas and beans remembering to leave roots in the soil to add nitrogen

Make sure you sweep up leaves from the lawn and borders or they’ll provide perfect places for slugs and snails to overwinter.

Prepare the greenhouse for winter, clean the glass, bubble wrap if necessary, ensure your heater is in good working order.

Prepare for next Spring

Plant bulbs now to give you an impressive display next spring.  If you want a natural look, throw handfuls of bulbs directly onto the lawn or soil and plant them where they fall. In borders opt for large clumps of bulbs – you’ll get a much better display. I always plant tulip bulbs in groups of 5 or more – you’ll find that if you plant them in clumps of 12 – 15 tulip bulbs then it will allow enough for you to pick a few for a vase in the house next Spring without it being obvious.

Think about planting a new ornamental tree – I have already picked three Silver Birch (Betula jacquemontii) to come bare root once the weather has turned cold. I’ll plant them in a triangle near the stone wall at the bottom, of the garden where their pure white stems will catch the morning sun. To keep them white, give them a hose down and scrub their bark with a soft brush. I also have my eye on a Liquid amber to add interest next Autumn. I still need to find a space for it but am looking forward to it’s fabulous scent when I crush it’s leaves.

Now is the ideal time to plant Japanese yellow onion sets and garlic. My favourite garlic supplier is The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight. www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk

Stone work on our design build and renovation project

We are now making good progress with the face stone work on our kitchen and sitting room extension. The space is amazing and I have been watching how the light at this time of year (when you really appreciate it!) falls across the space. It is going to be a really fantastic room and I am now getting excited about it. And with all the insulation going in it should be warm!

Stonework in progress

If only we cold resolve the issue with the underpinning under the garage. The first quote was for a floor beam which weighed 1 tonne and cost over £3k which was rather a shock. So the structural engineer has gone away to rethink. I just can’t see how we can physically man handle a beam this weight into the small space we have and there is no way we can get any machinery in to help us. So it’s back to the drawing board – or rather the very high tech computer model the structural engineer has. Watch this space
